The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.: This painting is in beautiful condition. It is unlined and has probably never been cleaned or varnished. It looks well and should most likely be hung as is. The paint layer has cracked very slightly in the sky immediately to the left of the upper mast of the primary sailboats, yet this is not unstable or unsightly. There are also a couple of tiny cracks in the bow of the main boat and perhaps one small retouch. Other than this, there appear to be no restorations. Dawson's paint layer shows quite strongly under ultraviolet light yet this does not appear to correspond to any retouches.
