Catalogue Note

Billy Donahue rode Leonatus to victory on May 23, 1983 in the ninth running of the Kentucky Derby. The day was sunny after three days of rain and the turf was heavy. Leonatus trumped his six competitors by two lengths only six days after his grueling win of the Blue Ribbon Stakes. Donahue had so much confidence in his steed that he bet his life savings on the race.
