Catalogue Note

A more sketchily executed preparatory drawing for this composition is in the Metropolitan Museum. In that sheet, in addition to other minor differences, the identity of the saints is less clear. There is, however, no trace of a surviving painting, but the finished character of the present drawing indicates that one may well have been commissioned.  Two other related drawings are known. On the verso of a drawing at Christ Church, Oxford, there is another study for the Virgin and Child,2 and a double-sided drawing in the Louvre shows the Christ Child in the attitude of Salvator Mundi, as He is here.3 The Metropolitan drawing is considered a late work (no earlier than 1580), although as James Mundy pointed out in his entry in the Bellinger exhibition catalogue, the recto of the Oxford sheet is apparently related to Federico's earlier work for Orvieto (1568-69).
