Catalogue Note
In the Christie's sale catalogue, Bernice Davidson was quoted as having compared the recto with figures of St. Peter in two of Perino's major altarpieces painted during his Genoese period.1 In the Mantua exhibition, Elena Parma connects it only to the St. Erasmus polyptych, a work of circa 1536, painted for an oratory in Genoa-Quinto and now in the Museo dell'Accademia Ligustica, Genoa. The charming study on the verso is not related to a known composition, but could have served for one of Perino's many decorative programs.
