Catalogue Note

Painted in Paris after Kessanlis' departure from Rome in 1960, the present work shows how his work was in constant fluctuation, the image no longer being '... connected with definite hierarchical conditions of the preceding combinations of materials and gestures. On the contrary, the image appears to be a fluid screen, constantly in flux, open to whole series of possible developments' (Emmanuel Mavrommatis, exh. cat. for Kessanlis. Grecia - Biennale di Venezia, 1988, p. 12), marking the artist's passage from representation to materiality.
