Description
- 61cm. 24in. high
5½-inch enamel dial signed Cachard, sucr. de Ch. Le Roi, centre seconds hand, the two train movement with pin wheel escapement mounted on the backplate, replaced grid-iron pendulum with heavy lenticular bob, beat adjustment on the crutch, outside count wheel striking on a bell, the case with a shallow pyramid cresting surmounted by a seated Egyptian figure, the frieze supported on six tapered columns on a rectangular base, the whole mounted with gilt masks, mythical beasts and figures
Condition
Dial in generally good condition with a few minor chips around both winding holes and a crack from the centre towards X, seconds hand probably replaced. Movement is complete but not running and much in need of a clean, pendulum is replaced. Case in generally good condition with some rubbing to the gilding and rubbing to the patination particularly on the base. With replaced pendulum but no winder.

An almost identical clock is illustrated Tardy, La Pendules Française, p. 262. Another with the same motifs, Taurus Apis, canopic vase, naophore sculpture is recorded in the Palais of Compiègne, it is illustrated in L'Egyptomanie dans L'art Occidental by JM. Humbert, p.183, fig.1.
Gaspard Cachard is recorded as working in Rue St-Denis, Paris and pronounced himself successor to Charles Le Roy during the French Revolution.
