Catalogue Note
Vases of a similar form with a suggested date of circa 1730 are illustrated by Elena Pelizzoni and Giovanna Znachi in La maiolica dei Terchi, Centro Di, Florence, 1982, p.43. no. 20, 21.
These rural scenes, executed in a soft palette unlike the brown-dominated, firmly drawn work of Terchi himself, were a favourite subject of Fernando Campani, often taken from engravings by Jan von Ossenbeeck. In this case, the original appears to be a painting by Bassano; see Pelizoni and Zanchi, op.cit., p.98, no. 86.
