Condition

This terracotta is in very good condition overall. There are, however, cracks and chips to the panelling on the wood base especially on the front (see catalogue image). There is a small repair to the front right corner of the terracotta base, a very small area of slight discoloration on the right side of the terracotta base and very minor firing cracks on the surface of the nymph's skin which are to be expected (none of which distract from the appearance of the work of art).

The present terracotta is a reduced version of Clodion's 1782 marble (now lost) for the bath of l'hôtel de Besenval, home of Josef-Victor Besenval, baron of Bronstadt, Switzerland.  The gently erotic model was extremely popular and reproductions circulated in France as early as 1788.  Three very similar models of the La Source are housed in the collections of the Pushkin, Moscow, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Huntington Art Gallery, San Marino.
