Catalogue Note
Jean Baptiste Tandart worked at the factory from 1754 to 1803.
One of Tandart's specialities in the mid-1760 was this type of decoration with two or three entwined floral and foliate garlands. It can be found on several vases en burette in the form of ewers with examples in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, dated 1766 and marked by Tandart (Jeffrey Munger, The Forsyth Wickes collection in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, n° 189, p. 136), at the Wallace Collection (Rosalind Savill, Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain, Vol. I, C286-7, pp. 286-289) or at the Wadsworth Atheneum with a pair dated 1767 (Linda Roth, French Eighteenth Century Porcelain at the Wadworth Atheneum, 2000, n° 102, p. 214). Tandart also painted these wreaths on the back or sides of vases, as on the pair of cassolettes Bachelier or the garniture of vases étrusques à cartels and vase à bâtons rompus at the Louvre (Pierre Ennès, Un Défi au Goût, 1997, n° 44, p. 96 and n° 48, p. 99).
Tandart had already painted in 1765 a similar écuelle, he received this year payment of 18 livres for an ecuelle 2eme gr. bleu nouveau à trois couronnes (Archives, Mns, overtime records, F.11, 1765).
