Description

  • interlaced LL monograms, letter-date V, painter's mark of three dots in purple, blue or gold, gilder's mark v.d. for Vandé
  • 38,8 cm. 15¼in. accross tray
comprising a tray with moulded ribbon handles (plateau rubans), a teapot and cover (théière Calabre), a sugar bowl and cover (pot à sucre Bouret), two cups and saucers (gobelets Bouillard), each reserved with panels of colorful flowers painted by Tandart l'ainé and with gilt floral wreaths; haircrack to one handle of the tray, chip to rim of one saucer

Private Collection, New England, sold at Christie's, New York, 5th May 1999, lot 32.

Condition

The tray with small chip and hair crack at one handle terminal, the rim with some regilding to top and bottom lobes, the teapot cover with chip to interior, tiny chips to flower finials, one saucer with 1cm. chip and short haircrack.

Catalogue Note

The model of the tray was called plateau à baguette or plateau à rubans.
Madame Sophie bought 1 déjeuner à rubans for 288 livres on 30 august 1775 (Archives MNS Vy6, fol. 26v). A green ground déjeuner rubans with a very similar gilding, dated 1775, was sold by Sotheby's, 12 June 1984, lot 180.
