Description

  • diameters 8 5/16 and 8 3/8 in.
  • 21.2 and 21.3 cm
each painted in the center with the arms of Lambton impaling Reid of Barra, Aberdeenshire, encircled by the ram's head crest and alternating sprays of peonies and hibiscus within a gilt spearhead border around the rim.  One with a tiny chip.

Condition

One (with bookplate) 1mm chip at outer edge, one with typed label with 1mm chip at outer rim edge in same place (7:30), 1/8 inch chip on upper edge at 12 o'clock, some wear to gilding on rim edge. Each with Bullivant sticker, one with Century House gallery sticker and bookplate of the Earl of Durham, one with typed label, purchased at Christie's 1947.

Catalogue Note

The reverse of one of these dishes is affixed with a print (possibly a bookplate) of the arms of the Earl of Durham quarterly, of whom the Lambton family were ancestors and their arms appear in the first quarter.

A soup plate from this service was in the collection of François Hervouët, sold at Sotheby's in Monte Carlo on June 22, 1987, lot 1712; and sold subsequently in these rooms on January 23, 1992, lot 443.
