Catalogue Note
An identical soup plate is illustrated by Kroes, p. 27, pl. XXV and p. 259, cat. no. 171, where the author relates on pp. 259-260 that "originally this plate was probably part of a set of 24 dessert plates which was still family property in 1788... At that time it was used for dessert, porridge or pudding." The service probably was commissioned by Johan Louis van Hardenbroek (1691-1747), who married Johanna Charlotte van Renesse van Lockhorst in 1718 and served the Admiralty of Amsterdam from 1713 to 1734. The service might have been ordered on the occasion of van Hardenbroek's retirement from naval service in 1734. Another identical soup plate was sold at Christie's in New York on January 21, 1999, lot 18.
