Description

  • diameter 8 15/16 in.
  • 22.7 cm
painted in the center in underglaze-blue, famille-verte enamels and gilding with the arms of Scholten impaling Hogenberg within a spearhead-and-dot roundel and a cell diaper border on the cavetto, the rim with four clusters of precious objects and flowering branches within a floral and precious objects border around the edge.  Some very small chips.

Condition

Miniscule chips under and on rim edge, 1/8 inch fracture on edge at 5 o'clock, minor stacking wear and slight wear to gilding in the arms, chip to footrim.

For the arms of Scholten of Amsterdam, see Rietstap, Vol. II, p. 721; and for those of Hogenberg of Holland, see ibid., Vol. I, p. 969.  A plate from this service, one of three ordered between 1725 and 1740 by Jan Agges Scholten (1690-1772) of Amsterdam and his wife Petronella Hogenburg (1694-1765), who were married in December 1711, is illustrated by Kroes, p. 35, pl. XXV and p. 123, cat. no. 25.  A large dish from the service was in the collection of Benjamin F. Edwards III, sold at Christie's in New York on January 22, 2002, lot 179; and a tea canister and a pair of teabowls and saucers were in the same collection, sold at Christie's in New York on January 20, 2004, lot 209.
