mahogany, the doors inlaid with simple leaf devices, fitted with broad hinges terminating in fleurs-de-lis, the interior similarly inlaid, on ball feet, the movement by J. Broadwood & Sons Ltd

Condition

An elegant example of good overall appearance. Old marks and scratches commensurate with age and use. Probably repolished. Musical movement neither tested nor guaranteed. Ivory keys with some minor yellowing and a few chips and natural cracks to edges. Ebony keys with some spotting. Hinges with some discolouration. Foot pedals also with some surface spotting.

Catalogue Note

This is Ashbee's version of the Baillie Scott 'Manxman' piano design. Ashbee's innovations include the double hinging of the doors and the design of the feet. A similar piano in grey oak with holly interior is illustrated, The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art, 1906, pp. 61-62 (see below).
