- A large Reformed Gothic open bookcase
- the sides carved with monogram 'PW' and '1872'
- 248.5cm. high by 144.5cm. wide by 55cm. deep;
- 8ft 1¾in., 4ft 9in., 1ft 9¾in.
oak, the pierced trefoil cornice above an arrangement of graduated open shelves surmounted by tapering finials, the lower section with panel cupboard doors carved with the symbols of the four evangelists together with floral sprays and small animals, enclosing two shelves
Condition
An imposing piece of sound construction. Traces of polychrome decoration and remnants of mounted leather to open shelves. Bottom shelf with three countersunk screw holes. Old marks and scratches overall, some deep. General staining and marking to open shelves; one with ink deposit. Some paint spots. Mounts slightly discoloured and with light surface marking. Some minor losses to the strut to the right of the left compartment door, visible in catalogue illustration and a few other minor chips and losses. A handsome piece. Catalogue is slightly bleached in colour.
