Description

  • An 'Arthurian' dining room suite
  • table 155cm. diameter; side table 85cm. high by 155cm. wide by 59cm. deep; sideboard 97cm. high by 221cm. wide by 64cm. deep; chairs 91cm. high;
  • 5ft 1in.; 2ft. 9in., 5ft 1in., 1ft 11 1/4in.; 3ft. 2 1/2 in., 7ft. 3in., 2ft 1 1/4 in.; 3ft.
oak, comprising: circular table, eight chairs, a side table and a sideboard, carved and painted with knights and horses, the table with names of the Knights of the Round Table, together with a pierced brass hanging light decorated with similar motifs

Condition

The sideboard with various old marks and scratches throughout consistent with age and use, and some staining to top. The three cupboard compartments each fitted with a shelf, the right-hand compartment with shallow pull out cutlery tray. Apron mounts with slight gaps at sides. The side table with various old marks and scratches overall. Generally sound. The chairs later upholstered, the upholstery with some wear and minor staining. Old marks and scratches overall. A few very minor repairs. Structurally sound; very strong construction. The table with old marks and scratches, a crack extending about 1 foot, and some staining. One leg with a chip to base. The hanging light: Two side chains not original. Interior fabric torn, worn, and stained. Fringe probably not original. Surface with minor scratches to dome; some minor pitting. Otherwise sound. The set has been repolished, and the polychrome decoration is quite fresh and probably restored. An unusual group of sound construction.

The carved decoration on this suite is similar to that illustrated in Jeremy Cooper, Victorian & Edwardian Furniture & Interiors, London, 1987, p. 599 (sic), where the design is attributed to Leonard F. Wyburd.
