Description

top drawer stamped `LAMB MANCHESTER 31121', brass locks stamped `LAMB MANCHESTER PATENT LEVER'
- 147cm. high by 58cm. wide by 36cm. deep;
- 4ft 10in., 1ft 10 3/4 in., 1ft 2 1/4 in.
Macassar ebony and ivory inlay, the mottled red marble top with a gilt metal three quarter rear gallery, the pair of panelled cupboard doors set with oval Wedgwood pale blue and white jasperware medallions and enclosing a hinged flap and an arrangement of sixteen pigeon holes, the lower section with five drawers above a plinth base
Condition
An attractive cabinet of good overall condition and fine quality. Some old marks and scratches. Top possibly a later stone, which has restorations, and its balustrade gallery is slightly separating from the slab. Some losses to the gilding. Mouldings around the plauqes have some cracks and separations. Ivory inlay generally good, save for the fourth drawer down, which has some lifting. Probably repolished and with some very minor chipping. One or two paint splatters. Interior doors with some light scraping from the writing fall. Pigeonholes and drawers with some minor staining but generally very clean. Velvet writing surface with minor staining. Two keys. An elegant piece ready for use and display.

Catalogue Note
James Lamb (1816-1903) founded a cabinet making workshop in Manchester that flourished during the boom years of the Industrial Revolution. Lamb worked in association with several prominent architect/designers of the period. They exhibited in several International Exhibitions.
