- A rare tureen and cover
- stamped plate marks including date letter `Y' for 1884
- 33cm. wide over handles;
- 1ft 1in.
silver-plated metal and ebonised wood, the shaped knop above a reeded body and tripod legs, the sides mounted with two bar handles
Condition
A large and impressive piece in overall good condition. There are some old marks and scratches to the surface overall and in particular to the interior - consistent with the piece having been used as a tureen. The joints between the feet and the body of the piece can be seen on the interior. There are white highlights to the graining of the handles. There is some slight tarnishing to the surface. A good example of a tureen of this size and shape

Catalogue Note
Dresser extols the virtues of this form in his Principles of Decorative Design, London, 1973, pp. 135-136. Several versions which were made by Hukin & Heath (Harry Lyons, Christopher Dresser, The People's Designer 1834 - 1904, Woodbridge, Suffolk, 2005, p. 202), but the Elkington models are considerably rarer.
