  • 3ft 2¼in., 6ft 4in., 1ft 7¾in.
walnut, the arched backrest with chip-carved decoration, drop-in seat, on spreading legs joined by an open stretcher

Condition

An attractive piece in good overall condition. Some old marks and scratches. Piece has been repolished. Upholstery is later. Colour of wood has faded and has one or two areas of slight staining, such as to left arm and overall colour is slightly darker than suggested by catalogue illustration. Ready for use.

Gimson's designs for similar settles are in the collection of the Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum (no. 1941.222.017, a settle made for Gimson's own cottage at Sapperton, as well as no. 1941.222.203). A further example can be seen in a 1904 photograph of Sidney Barnsley's living room at Beechanger, Sapperton, Gloucestershire (Annette Carruthers and Mary Greensted, Good Citizen's Furniture, The Arts and Crafts Collection at Cheltenham, London, 1999, frontispiece).  see below
