Catalogue Note

This view will have been witnessed by Turner of Oxford in the summer of 1838.  Highland views had become popular subjects for collectors at the Society of Painters in Water Colour, noted by Turner of Oxford in a letter to the Secretary, 3rd January 1857, 'drawings of mountain scenery....of late seem to be preferred by my friends,' and large watercolours such as this, especially with distant sunsets made a powerful impression on collectors in the 1840's and 1850's.

William Turner of Oxford exhibited views of this Castle and Loch twice in 1845, again in 1857 and finally in 1861, all at The Society of Painters in Watercolour Colour. The present work would appear to be one of the 1845 exhibits. It was entitled: Ellandonan Castle, Loch Duich, and the Mountains of Glen Shiel, Ross-shire - Sunset.
