Condition

The canvas has been lined. There is a repaired tear to the canvas just left of centre (above and to the bull's hind leg) and a further repaired tear to the lower right quadrant. There is a further suggestion of a minor repaired tear towards the upper left corner. There is some minor frame abrasion to the extreme edges. Ultraviolet light reveals areas of retouching corresponding to all the repairs and some further scattered spots to the sky, lower foreground and elsewhere. Held in a lightly decorated gold painted composite frame with some minor damage to the extremities.

President Sir General Grant Dam Mearns was winner of the first prize at the Highland Society at Perth and Glasgow 1871, first prize at Ayr 1872 and gold medal at Highland Society at Stirling 1873.
