Catalogue Note

The Order of St. Anne was originally founded in 1735 by Duke Karl Friedrich of Holstein-Gottorp in memory of his wife Anna Petrovna, the daughter of Peter the Great.  After their son, the future Peter III, was named by Elizabeth as her heir to the Russian throne in the autumn of 1742, the Order began to be conferred upon Russians.  In 1797 Peter's son Paul I re-established it as a purely Russian award, carrying the right to hereditary nobility in all its classes until 1845.  The structure of the Order was reformed on several occasions and badges featuring the Imperial Eagle, rather than a portrait of the Saint, were presented to non-Christian recipients.
