Catalogue Note
The Order of St. Andrew, named in honour of the first-called Apostle, was founded by Peter the Great in 1698. The highest-ranking and most prestigious Imperial Order, it was bestowed in a single class and was the only Russian Order for which a Collar was ever authorised. The badge could be worn either from the Collar or on a Sash, according to the occasion. Recipients of the Order were also admitted automatically to the Orders of St. Alexander Nevsky, St. Anne (First Class), St. Stanislaus (First Class) and the White Eagle.
