Description

oil on canvas, depicting Christ laid out upon his funeral shroud, surrounded by mourners led by his mother, Mary

Provenance

Sotheby's, London, The Peter Zervudachi Sale, 10th and 11th June 1998, Lot 718

Condition

The original canvas has been laid on a new canvas. There are some losses to the top right corner visible in the catalogue image. There is a layer of light surface dirt and the varnish has slightly discoloured. There is extensive paint loss in the lower right and lower left sections, to the edges and in places throughout. There are fine lines of craquelure throughout, which has resulted in paint loss in places. There are holes from the original stretching running at regular intervals along each edge. There is a crease running horizontally across the centre. UV light reveals evidence of retouching in places throughout. Held in a black and gold painted, wooden frame. The frame is chipped at the top and edges. We would advise prospective buyers to view.
