Catalogue Note
When the viewer regards the icon of Christ Enthroned he sees a heavenly world that is invisible, the image a mysterious witness to the ineffable nature of God. The Enthroned Christ Pantocrator is the most important subject of the Russian art of the icon. The composition developed in the 12th to 13th century in Byzantium and spread throughout Russia during the 15th and 16th century. In Russia the popularity of the theme is closely bound up with the development of the iconstasis, of which this image forms the central part.
