  • 60 by 46cm., 23 1/2 by 18in.
the warrior saint shown astride his charger holding a lance in his right hand with which he slays the heathen Bulgarian King Kalojan who laid seige to Thessaloniki in 1297

Condition

There are areas of regilding and a large area comprising the head and the neck of the horse and the face of St. Demetrios has been repainted. We would advise prospective buyers to view.

Demetrius, like George, is often represented on horseback, dressed as a Roman officer in armour with a billowing cape over his shoulders. The image symbolizes the battle between Christianity and heathendom, and, in a more general sense, between good and evil.
