Description

  • diameter: 9cm; 4½ in.
circular, the lid nielloed with a map of the Western and Central Siberian Plateaus, the underside with the Eastern part of Siberia, the sides with folkloristic types, with workmaster's initials in Cyrillic I.*, standard mark obliterated 

Condition

There is significant wear to the gilding with polish residue and surface scratches throughout. The outside border of the base is slightly twisted, the actual base is also a little squashed to the right hand side of 'Severnoe More'.

The box is very similar to those sent by the Governor of Siberia Denis Chicherin to St. Petersburg with his account of the Aleutian Islands which were recently discovered.  For a comparable box, please see Alexander von Solodkoff, Russian Gold and Silver, Trefoil Books, London, 1981, pp.106-107 .
