Aleksei Nikolaevich Kuropatkin rose rapidly through the ranks of the military gaining company command before the age of twenty and graduating first in his class from the Nicholas Staff College in 1874. In 1904 he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of His Majesty's Manchurian Army of Operations. After the Battle of the Scha Ho on the 26th October 1904 the Tsar appointed General Kuropatkin as 'Commander in Chief of all the Fighting Forces opposing the Japanese by Land and Sea.'
