Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This painting is still stretched on its original stretcher. The paint layer is stable and well-stretched. The shiny black top half of the picture shows a few small scuffs which could be wiped off or corrected.
The original sheen to the paint layer is slightly blanched across the bottom edge and there are a few blemishes visible. There may be a couple of retouches along the bottom edge yet none that are obvious. If the varnish in the red chair-backs on the lower edge were to be addressed as well as some of the blemishes to the black background, the painting would be ready to hang as is.
