Catalogue Note
The wedding fan was made in 1874 for the marriage of Karl Theodor Duke in Bavaria (1839-1909) with Maria Josepha (Marie José) Infanta of Portugal, Princess of Braganza. She was the daughter of Dom Miguel Duke of Braganza who from 1828 to 1834 called himself King of Portugal until he was overthrown and forced into exile.
The photograph shows Duke Karl Theodor with his wife, Infanta Marie José and their three children, Amalie Marie (daughter from the Duke's first marriage to Princess Sophie of Saxony, died 1867), Sophie Adelheid (born 1875) and Elisabeth Valerie (born 1876). The photo was taken by the Bavarian Court Photographer Albert.
The crowned initials MT are those of Queen Marie Therese of Bavaria, Archduchess of Austria-Este (1849-1919), consort of Bavaria's last King Ludwig III.
