The photograph of Duchess Marie Gabrielle in Bavaria (photograph no. 4) was taken in 1903 in Tokio by Maruki Riyo (1850-1923) during a trip with her husband, Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria. Maruki Riyo counted among Japan's finest portrait photographers whose studio was sought out by both Japanese and foreigners alike.
