Provenance

Prince Stolberg, Schloss Wernigerode (according to a label on the reverse)

Exhibited

Halle, Staatliche Galerie Moritzburg by 1955 and 1963 (according to a label on the reverse)

Condition

The painting is warmer in tone and has less contrast than the catalogue illustration suggests. The painting has a relining. The paint surface has slightly flattened. Paint losses are visible scattered throughout the painting, but especially in the areas along the edges and a few small spots in the sitter's face, low neckline and dress. The paint surface has a tendency towards flaking in the areas around the edges. The white impastos of the embroidered dress are well preserved. The canvas undulates along the bottom side which has been retouched as well. A few filled and retouched spots are visible to the upper and left background, and a few small spots in the sitter's face. The paint surface is covered with a dirty and discoloured varnish layer, with surface dirt. Inspection under UV-light confirms abovementioned retouchings and reveals additional ones to the background area and scattered spots in the blue dress. Offered in a gilt wood frame with basic plaster ornaments, with damages and chips. (JD)
