William Hogarth, painter and printmaker, was among the most important primogenators of the English School which rose to prominence in the second half of the 18th century. Like Rembrandt before him, he seized upon the economic and professional benefits afforded by the print medium. Unlike Rembrandt, Hogarth's most celebrated graphic works were frequently reproductions of his most famous paintings. Through his innovative approach, Hogarth's work reached a wide audience and help set the standard for future generations of English printmakers.
