Catalogue Note
From the portfolio Die Hölle (Hell).
The teary violinist in the center plays for a group of weepy, closed-eyed spectators including soldiers and elderly citizens. The original intended title as indicated by a letter from the artist to his wife dated May 24, 1915 was "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" derived from what would become German national anthem in 1922.
