Three signatures (each "Wm Ellery") on two numbers of the periodical The Friend of Peace (Nos. 5 and 13, Boston, 1816 and 1818). Signatures on wrappers of number 5 and first leaf of both numbers. Original printed wrappers (9 1/2 x 6 in.; 241 x 152 mm, uncut); dampstaining on front cover of number 5, scattered foxing in both numbers.

Catalogue Note
William Ellery (1727-1820) was a Rhode Island merchant, who later became Clerk of the Rhode Island General Assembly and Judge of the Supreme Court of Rhode Island. He replaced Samuel Ward, who had died, in the Continental Congress in 1776. He had become an abolitionist by 1785 and served as the first customs collector of the port of Newport under the Constitution.
