Description

  • Édouard Baldus
  • 'theatre romain, arles'
albumen print, titled and numbered 'No. 128' by the photographer in the negative, mounted, the photographer's facsimile signature stamp (Daniel 6) on the mount, matted, framed, a Gitterman Gallery, New York, label on the reverse, circa 1860

Condition

Grading this albumen print on a scale of 1 to 10 - a 10 being a print that has rich, even, dark tones and highlights that retain all of their original detail - this print has a rating of 10. The print has deep brown/purple dark tones and is essentially in excellent condition. In raking light, what appears to be a small scuffed area in the lower central portion of the print is visible, as well as a few tiny deposits of original retouching. None of these issues undermines the fine appearance of this impressive print. The mount is age-darkened at the periphery, and there is random light foxing on the reverse that does not affect the print.
