a group of 6 photographs, including What Shall I Say?Lounging, Letty Felix Jones in Front of a Japanese Screen, and others, platinum prints, one signed by the photographer in pencil on the image, each annotated with the sitter's name in an unidentified hand in pencil or ink on the reverse; accompanied by 2 photogravures, comprising Spring from Camera Notes, and Edge of the Woods--Evening, the latter signed by the photographer in pencil in the margin, both annotated with the sitters' names in unidentified hands in pencil or ink on the reverse, matted, 1896-1905 (Symbolism of Light, pls. 3, 18, and 34; Naef, pl. 51, fig. 541) (8)

Condition

The 6 platinum prints and 2 photogravures are all in generally very good condition. The edges of the platinum prints have been lightly bumped, causing some minor chipping and/or creasing to the corners. A few of these prints have some scattered areas where the surface has been very lightly rubbed. A study of Letty Felix Jones with her hand on a doorknob has a one-inch vertical tear at the bottom left corner. The two photogravures are in generally very good to excellent condition. 'Edge of the Woods--Evening' is signed by the photographer in the margin. The triptych gravure has darkened slightly with age.

Catalogue Note

The photographs in this group were included in a number of important exhibitions of Clarence White's work.  Spring, What Shall I Say?, and Lounging were shown in the Delaware Art Museum's 1977 Clarence H. White exhibition.  Seven prints from this group were included in the 1979 exhibition at the Denison University Art Gallery entitled Clarence H. White: Photographs from the Newark Years.  Lounging was also shown in the Columbus Museum of Art's 130 Years of Ohio Photography exhibition.  A detailed exhibition list is available upon request.
