Catalogue Note
Hans Finsler is one of the important practitioners of the photography of the 'Neue Sachlichkeit' in Germany and Switzerland. After studying architecture and art history, he became a teacher at the school for arts and crafts Burg Giebeichenstein in Halle, where he established a photography class in 1927, and photographed the objects and artefacts produced here. In 1932, he moved to Zurich to teach photography at the school for arts and crafts and opened his own studio for advertising photography. Finsler was an active teacher of photography until 1957; among his students were René Burri and Werner Bischof.
