Catalogue Note
From the late 1920s until the mid-40s, August Sander regularly left Cologne to photograph landscape: his pictures of the Rhine valley and the Siegengebirge area reflect his objective, distant, wholly unromantic style. Yet he described nature as 'a veritable paradise, offering the stressed city-dweller hours of relaxation and self recollection away from all the noise and bustle.' (August Sander, In photography there are no unexplained shadows!, exh. cat., Cologne, 1994, p. 195.)
