Catalogue Note

Anton Stankowski is an important figure in German graphic design and photography in the 20th century. He studied at the Folkwang Academy in Essen with Wilhelm Poeter and Max Burchartz who introduced him to the principles of New Design encompassing interior design, typography and photography. He worked as a graphic designer in Zurich and, after the Second World War, in Stuttgart where he became an important member of the artistic scene. It is here that the Stankowski Foundation was established in 1983. Stankowski's photographic work can be described as unconventional even in the context of modernist European photography.
