Catalogue Note

Jürgen Schadeberg was the principal photographer and later the art director of the great South African illustrated magazine Drum. A considerable contributor to the magazine himself in its heyday in the 1950s, of course, he also made a major impact on a whole new generation of South African photographers, among them Peter Magubane, Bob Gosani and Ian Berry.
