Original canvas - patch added on the reverse in the right upper part.
Thin net of cracks. Few small repainted parts scattered in the sky and on the costumes of the two characters in the foreground.

Catalogue Note
Stylistiquement le tableau est proche des oeuvres que Fromentin exécute au retour de son second voyage en Algérie en 1847-1848. Il pourrait s'agir du tableau exposé au Salon de 1849 à Paris, n°805, sous le titre Smala Si-Hamel-Bel-Hadj passant l'Oued-Biraz (Sahara). Un autre tableau de sujet proche, également exposé au Salon de 1849, n°803, Tentes de la Smala de Si-Hamed-Bel-Hadj (Sahara) est conservé au Musée Fabre, Montpellier.
