Condition

Good overall condition. The picture is too contrasted, in fact the colours are softer, noticeably around the face and the arms.Original canvas. A dip on the right part visible on the picture. Two small repaints ni the lower left area under the cushion. Small hole in the lower right corner along the drapery. Small repaints along the adges. Small missing parts in the background. Old repaint in the top part done to restore a small hole.

Catalogue Note

Edouard-Louis Dubufe fit une brillante carrière de portraitiste, qui culmina avec son portrait de l'impératrice Eugénie (Huile sur toile, 1853, Compiègne, musée du château). En 1872, il peignit des portraits plus fantaisistes inspirés de l'Orient parmi lesquels on peut citer: Medjé (huile sur toile, non localisée), Thumar (huile sur toile exposée au Salon de 1872, non localisée) ainsi que notre tableau titré Le café.

Le tableau est cité dans le Carnet de recettes d'Edouard  Dubufe, à la page concernant l'année 1872, avec la mention suivante: Pour solde Goupil 18 Mai (5 tableaux New-York) (le café). Il a donc probablement été acquis par la maison Goupil, pour sa succursale de New-York.
