Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. A River Landscape with Apollo and Daphne The canvas is lined and the paint is stable and secure. Under U-V examination there can be seen a scattering of retouchings to the sky and to reduce stretcher marks. Paint thinnesses to the foliage, left, particularly the pale leaves, have been augmented, also to the branches and trunks and the sheep. The mid-ground has likewise been strengthened. There is a pale filigree of shrinkage cracking to the darker passages of paint. The surface is covered in a patchy varnish which does not saturate evenly. A Bosky River Landscape with a Couple and their Sheep in the Foreground, possibly Daphnis and Chloe The canvas is lined and the paint layer is stable but a little raised in some areas. There is a small restored damage to the sky, upper right. The female figure the putto , right, and most of the sheep have been reinforced where the paint has been abraded , also the bottom edge in the foreground and some areas in the mid-ground. The filigree of pale shrinkage cracks in the foliage and through the darker passages have been reduced. Overall, the painting is in good condition."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
