Claude Vignon

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The unlined canvas is vulnerable. There is a loss of tension which has led to stretcher marks and the paint surface is raised and unstable. Discoloured retouchings cover some small paint losses to the flesh tones of Susanna. One or two other minor paint losses can be seen beneath the discoloured varnish otherwise in a good untouched restorable condition. Carved and gilt wood frame, good condition."

We are grateful to Mme. Paola Pacht Bassani who, following inspection of the original, has fully endorsed the attribution of this previously unknown work to Claude Vignon. Mme. Pacht Bassani has proposed a dating for the work to the 1640s.
