"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The canvas is lined and the paint surface is stable but a little raised. Under U-V light a scattering of small restorations can be seen across the paint surface denoting previous minor paint losses. There are larger restored losses to the hands and to the front of the habit. There are areas in which an earlier discoloured varnish remains and slight abrasions to some of the darker passages e.g. the hair , the collar of the habit and the background. The face is in good condition as is most of the habit. Removal of the varnish would improve the tonality. Overall, in a good restorable condition. Modern gold painted frame, minor chips."

Another version of this composition, in octagonal format, is in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (see C. d'Afflitto, Lorenzo Lippi, Florence 2002, p. 312, no. 134, reproduced). The Louvre version, previously attributed to Cigoli, has been dated to circa 1639.
