Catalogue Note

Chalon painted a series of seven paintings entitled The Passions of the Horse, six of which are offered for sale in this lot. Four of these paintings were exhibited over a period of six years at the Royal Academy. They were clearly intended to advertise Chalon's abilities as an equine artist to potential patrons. Indeed they were later considered by Sir Walter Gilbey as exemplary examples of 'Chalon's mastery of equine anatomy.'
