Catalogue Note

Melpomene was one of the muses of tragedy and her attributes include a dagger, a crown and a sceptre.

This painting can be compared stylistically to Brenet's Allegory of Justice in the grand salon of the Parliament of Douai (see M. Sandoz, Nicolas-Guy Brenet 1728-1792, Paris 1979, cat. no. 57, p. 94, pl. XII).
