Condition

The canvas has been recentlly relined. The paint surface is in good condition. There are some minor surface scratches. Offered in a wood and plaster frame which has suffered some minor knocks. Overall in fair condition.

Catalogue Note

A 19th-century copy after Guercino's original in a Private Collection (see L. Salerno, I Dipinti del Guercino, Rome 1988, pp. 75 & 356, cat. no. 287, reproduced p. 75). Another version, considered a studio copy by Salerno, is in Florence, Palazzo Pitti.

The inscription on the book can be translated as "Hail chaste Syon, Maiden that hast endured much suffering."
