Description

  • A hillly landscape with a figure resting in the foreground, possibly Jacob's dream
  • stamped on the reverse with the brand of the city of Antwerp and a panel maker's mark
  • oil on panel

Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The oak panel is cradled with a horizontal join, repaired and now discoloured. There are 2 or 3 three splits from the right hand edge. The paint layer is a little unstable along the bottom edge and elsewhere. Apart from the discoloured retouching along the join and a scattering elsewhere and some shrinkage of the paint layer in the darker passages, the painting is in a good condition with well preserved paint and it's impasto. Removing the discoloured varnish would improve the overall tonality. Offered in a dark wood frame, good condition."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

The same reclining figure appears in a similar work by De Keuninck in Maastricht, Bonnefantenmuseum, inv. no. 657 (see H. Devisscher, Kerstian de Keuninck 1560-1633, Freren 1987, p. 144, cat. no. A4, reproduced).
